------------

The year-long course is focused on writing for vocal/choral composition. It begins with Gregorian chant and progresses to 16th-century modal counterpoint, from monophonic writing to the creation of polyphony such as madrigals and motets, eventually applying these skills to the modern choral writings.

The course is much based on practical exercises, with the following topics scheduled for discussion:

  • Introduction to Authentic and Plagal Modes
  • Practice of Fux Species counterpoint
  • Analysis of two- and three-part chansons by composers including Dufay, Machaut, etc., leading to exercises in two-part mixed counterpoint and canon
  • Analysis of works by Renaissance masters such as Josquin, Ockeghem, Palestrina, Lassus, Victoria, etc., leading to the composition of three-part madrigals or motets
  • Study of modern choral compositions, including topics such as vocal arrangement, range, counterpoint techniques, text painting, intention and aesthetics
