------------ The course intends to lead to an understanding of the basic structure of musical instruments, along with a basic knowledge of their timbre, range, and other characteristics. The course begins with arrangement for small chamber ensembles from some selections of piano pieces. Through the involvement of actual performers and their performances, students are expected to strengthen their inner hearing and practical application of orchestration, which is useful for future works in composition, teaching and conducting. Through recordings and live performances, students can gain an understanding of range, sound production, idioms and techniques of instruments and the timbral combinations. Additionally, score analysis is to help explore how composers from different periods utilized various instruments and notational methods, and to understand the interaction between aesthetic changes and orchestration techniques. In addition to learning and imitating styles, the course also encourages practices on arrangement of folksongs or famous tunes, which is quite practical in the present music field. - Understanding of string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
